Job sheet M-02

TV wall mounting

A wall-mounted TV is a heavy, top-heavy thing hanging off a few bolts. It deserves the same care as a shelf full of books, and then some.

1.0 What the job involves

We start with the bracket and the wall. The bracket has to be rated for the TV's weight and size, and it has to be fixed into something that can hold it: timber studs, steel studs with the right fixings, or brick and block. Plasterboard on its own is never enough for a TV.

Height matters more than people expect. We sit where you watch and set the centre of the screen near seated eye level, unless you want it higher, and we mark it with you before drilling.

Cables are tidied on the surface, in a cable cover that runs from the TV to the power point and the cabinet below. We use the power points you already have. We don't run power inside the wall, add or move power points, or do anything that needs an electrician; if you want those, an electrician does them first and we come after.

With the TV hung, we level it, set any tilt or swing, check it can't lift off the bracket, and show you how to move it if it's a full-motion arm. The ACCC warns that toppling furniture and TVs injure people every week, so if the old TV stand or a cabinet is staying, we can anchor that too.

2.0 The process, step by step

  1. 2.1

    Bracket

Bracket checked against the TV's weight, size and mounting holes.

  5. 2.5

4.0 How pricing works

Free quote. The wall type, the bracket and the length of cable cover set the time. Brick and block take longer than timber studs; full-motion arms take longer than fixed brackets.

If you've already bought the bracket, send the model so we can check it suits. If you haven't, we can supply one and list it on the quote.

5.0 Questions

Can you hide the cables in the wall?

No. We tidy cables on the surface in a cable cover. Anything inside the wall that involves power is electrician work.

Can you add a power point behind the TV?

No. That's for an electrician. We can come after and hang the TV.

Do I need to buy the bracket?

Either way. Send us the model if you have one; otherwise we'll supply one rated for your TV.

How high should it go?

Usually with the screen centre near seated eye level. We'll mark it with you before drilling.

Can you mount on a brick wall?

Yes. Brick and block take masonry anchors and a little longer.
